Refugee Youth Health Project

POSITION SUMMARY

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services is committed to and works to promote health and well-being and improved access to services for immigrants and refugees in Toronto by addressing medical, social, economic, settlement and integration and environmental issues. The Centre envisions a future in which diverse individuals, families and communities can achieve health with dignity.
The Research Department at Access Alliance conducts ongoing research, using Community Based Research principles, to generate evidence for promoting health equity for newcomer groups, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds. Our Refugee Youth Health Project plans to investigate educational gaps and challenges that refugee youth (between the ages 16 to 30) face before and after coming to Canada, and to explore the relationship between education and health (particularly mental health). The project will have a strong policy focus in order to identify concrete policy gaps and policy recommendations for overcoming systemic barriers that refugee youth face in pursuing their educational goals in Canada.

We seek a dynamic graduate student with excellent research and writing skills to work as a Graduate Research Assistant on this project:


RESPONSIBILITIES

§
Assist with development of survey instrument and interview guide
§
Assist with recruitment, screening/selection of participants
§
Assist with coordinating meetings, workshops, trainings
§
Taking meeting minutes and field notes
§
Assist with data collection
§
Transcribe interview transcripts
§
Assist in coding and data preparation
§
Assist with analysis and writing
§
Assist with knowledge exchange activities
§
Provide support to project tasks – as needed


SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

§
Graduate student in social sciences, social work, public health or health related field
§
Excellent research knowledge in both qualitative and quantitative methods with minimum 2 years experience working in successful research projects
§
Knowledge of Community-based Research an asset
§
Strong analysis and writing skills
§
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with individuals and groups
§
Demonstrated commitment to work from an anti-racism/anti-oppression framework
§
Understanding of issues affecting low income, racialized immigrants and refugees
§
Experience working with low-income, marginalized communities
§
Flexible and able to work under pressure
§
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

The Graduate Assistant will be supervised by the Senior Research Scientist at Access Alliance and Co-Principal Investigators of the project.


Duration of Contract:                   October 1st, 2010 - March 31st, 2011
Total Effort
: Approximately 16-21 hours/week
Pay rate:         $25/hr


Hours scheduled per week will vary according to project needs. Some evening and weekend work will be required.


Location: 340 College Street (occasionally work offsite and across all 3 Access Alliance locations)
