· The School of Social Work at York University began as the Social Welfare Program in 1968.

· The school’s mandate was to provide students with the opportunity to obtain a professional degree on a part-time basis and courses were only offered in the evenings.

· Professor Gerry Erickson was the first GPD of the program.

· The first students graduated from the program in 1972 with a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours).

· The name of the program was changed to Social Work in 1973.

· The graduate degree in Social Work was launched in 1985.

· The Direct Entry stream of the BSW program was launched in 2002.

· There are currently twenty full-time faculty members and thirty part-time faculty members.
